Tonight as I lay on my bed, thoughts came rushing and caught me off guard with my curiousity. As I dig into things deeply, it suddenly halted me into one question: What kind of system our media have? As I gather instances piece by piece, I came into realization that I should not have asked this, nor even thought of this. It might only give me a headache, but I cannot help but to wonder.
History, as they say, is the central part of evertything because we cannot go forward without stepping back to our origin. And so let me first discuss the historical origin of our media system.
During the Spanish regime, our free press as understood in modern democratic nations was unknown in the Philippines. The government under Spain had absolute power to prohibit and penalize condemnation of the prevailing policies, and so there was no free society.
When the Propaganda Movement and the Revolution came, Filipino people began to search for freedom. This vigilant concern of the people for a free press gave real liberty to newspapers in areas under their control. However, there was no censorship of publications.
In American regime, there was hope that the American government would preserve to the Filipinos a large measure of freedom. Civil government was established.
Indeed, an assurance of a free press became one of the most powerful instruments of the Filipinos in their struggle for freedom from the said regime.
Through the years, we have four media systems. the Authoritarian, which says that the government is supreme and accepts no challenge to its power was also the first "theory" of the press. The press under this theory remains privately owned but is controlled through licensing and sedition laws. The second system is the Libertarian, which says that the media and the government are independent of each other. Free expression here is valued. The Soviet-Communist is the third system. It suggests that the government owns the media and uses it for its own greater causes. Free expression is not valued in this system. The fourth media system is the Social Responsibility and like Libertarian, the government and the media are separate.
Having mentioned the four systems of media, I was thinking where our media system would fall. And as I gather again the instances, I realized that we actually have a hybrid of the different media structures.
Yes, we are in a democratic society and it is our set of mind that we have a free press. But if we would think of it critically, the right to be free that is assured to us is actually not absolute. I mean, why did GMA banned the Daily Tribune and confiscated its publications if the media`s right to express is absolute?
Indeed, the freedom of the press that was fought for by the Filipino people many years ago has not yet been attained. The government still accepts no challenges to its power and we are still being manipulated by some authorized people. As media players, we are still searching for that freedom to exercise our right and we are struggling to own that priviledge.
It is actually not a question of what kind of media system we have, nor a question of do we really have an absolute right. Realizing that we are not yet free might be viewed us as a loser, but remembering the fact that we have been fighting for only one purpose makes us a winner.

As I was scrolling one of my favorite parks in our place yesterday, I suddenly realized that nobody was there. That was around 2:00 in the afternoon, and so I thought that people were just taking a nap. I felt like being isolated but I still continued walking while puffing my remaining stick of cigarettes. I felt even more being alone when I went home and saw my boardmates all busy watching the "Mano-A-Mano:Paquiao-Larios fhight. I had no choice but to go with them. I took my seat and watched the ever awaited fight of the so called "champions".
While watching the fight, I see a lot of different personalities and even politicians. There were the Estrada`s group and the Singson`s company; the Lopez family and the Santos one. Even Vice President Noli De Castro was there to support our warrior. Couples like Aga Muhlach and wife Charlene Gonzales; and Raymart Santiago and wife Claudine Barretto were also present. Even Richard Gutierrez from the rival network was there to cheer for Manny Paquaio.
I must admit that I am, somehow, isolated from my company because I hate seeing myself watching such fight. I mean, What is that fight for? I wanna raise the question to my boardmates, but I hesitated bacause I knew that they would have the same answers.
Suddenly, thoughts caught me off guard on the fact that the fight, somehow unites the country, joins the people, and makes an alliance between competing groups. We all know that our nation has been facing a lot of economic and political problems and it seems that nobody knows what to do right. Instead of being united, our government officilas have different point of views on certain matters. They are all debating for what they think is right for our country. They are all competing, and for worse, they are hitting each other below the belt.
I just want to point out that how can a problem be solved when the people who are supposed to make a solution have different and competing ideas? The issue of the impeachment for GMA, for instance, is an ideal model of what I am discussing about. If I am one of the officials in Malacanang, why would I waste my time for such hearing of impeachment trial if I could devote my effort to more meaningful public concerns? I think, there is actually no better alternative for our reigning President, and so why don`t we just be contented with the way GMA manage our country? Have we ever think that she would still be the President even without cheating the election? But not that much, I think! So who do you think could be a better alternative?
Indeed, the fight of Manny Paquaio plays a vital role in uniting our country as well as its competing officials. An hour of being united for only one purpose while watching the fight may change a lot.

As what has been mentioned by Jaime Ramirez, a press that is free is essential to a democratic society because its freedom gives it power. This power in our country implies responsilbility in its exercise. No institution, therefore, can limit the power of free press.
Adding to what Ramirez suggested, there can be no free society if there is no free press. We have a democratic and free society and so media practitioners have to not take this for granted. As the "eyes" of every citizen, media players must be always aware on whatever issues that concern the public. And as the" voices" of our society, these players must be brave enough to utter and publish such public concerns.
Indeed, www.mediacafe.com is a milieu wherein media practitioners can enjoy their priviledge of being free to voice out public concerns. They always have the right to sit back and relax while discussing on certain vital issues just like in real KAPEHAN.
